Chapter 5:

His head was blank. He had forgotten everything, from the home invasion to the getaway. All he could remember was taking a nap, before waking up chained to a metal table. His bottom was freezing; the air-conditioning made the sensation of metal on flesh more profound. There was nothing for him to use as a means of escaping. There were syringes attached to his arms, poking into his veins and injecting some form of liquid. His head was plastered with plastic pads stuck on wires of different colours. He could also feel those pads on his chest. It was like this was an experiment, and he was the test subject. He had nowhere to go.

Her high heels had become signature to her style, alerting anyone within a mile radius of her approach. She had a white jacket over a black blouse. Her hair was also white, styled to make her seem posh and upright, with strands of hair sweeping across the right side of her delicate face and sharp jawline. Her right hand reached into her red leather purse and pulled out a keycard, placing the item on a black scanner and granting her access into the room. Two men turned around and sharply rose, expecting her arrival but not so soon. Her sapphire blue eyes gazed past the examiners and through a one-way tinted window, assessing their guest. They were not impressed.

She pointed to McCain.

“Are you sure this man took down three of our agents? And lost one causing a commotion?” she sharply questioned in her actress-like voice. “He doesn’t seem intimidating at all.”

“Yes, ma’am. This is the asset.” the officer on the left reported in a Welsh accent. “According to our on-site agents, he improvised his getaway, using household items and the afternoon crowd as his advantage.”

“It was only after a squadron of Scotland Yard forces tranquilized him that we could go in.” the second agent added. Their superior rolled her eyes and sighed in exasperation.

“Let me speak to him.” she instructed.

Silence.

“Are you two deaf?” she raised her voice slightly higher. “I said, let me speak to him.”

The Welsh agent pressed a button underneath his desk and unlocked the door.

“Fucking Christ.” she muttered under her breath, gently pushing the door against the wall and dragging a metal chair across the floor, making a scraping noise as she took a seat directly next to a semi-awake interviewee.

“Hello? Are you there?” she asked, waving her hand in his face. “I swear, those Scotland Yard brutes don’t know how to administer a sedative in the correct dosage.”

She took out a small capsule and jabbed the contents into the man’s leg, making him yelp.

“There we go.” she smirked as he finally came to.

McCain looked around this odd space, having forgotten everything. His eyes soon met those of a strange lady in a black blouse and white jacket.

“Who the fuck are you?” he snapped, suspicious of the whole affair.

“You can call me Her Majesty, if you want.” the lady sarcastically answered, leaning back with her arms folded. “We have no relation, of course, but I technically rule this agency.”

“Agency?” McCain repeated, this time shocked. “Don’t tell me you’re a bloody spy.”

The lady leaned forward once again.

“Bingo.” she whispered. “I’m Director Katerina Hall of the Secret Intelligence Service. You’d know us as MI6.”

McCain took a minute to absorb all of this.

Then, he returned his gaze upon the stranger.

“What the hell does MI6 want with me?” he asked after some silence. “I’m no terrorist.”

Hall chuckled at this excuse.

“Really?” she scoffed. “Because I have a mission report from today that says otherwise.”

Now McCain remembered. The “routine check”. The ladies at the alley. The black van. This all fell down to one woman; the one sitting right before his eyes. He tried to lean forwards, but the needles held him back.

“You fucking bastard.” he scowled. “You had them try and kill me.”

“If I had, just saying.” Hall held up a finger. “You wouldn’t be here.”

McCain let this logic settle in.

“If you’ve kept me alive, after all I did to your minions, you want my life for something.”

Hall didn’t do anything. McCain took this as an affirmation. She then knocked on the table thrice, summoning the two agents from before.

“Get this man out of here. I’ll take him on a little tour.” she instructed.

The duo complied immediately. McCain knew she was milking his trust, but played along.

“Alright, you’ve set me free. Doesn’t mean I’m not yet released from your grip.”

Silence.

“Come with me.” Hall offered, and walked out of the room. McCain decided to follow her.
