Chapter 6:

As he and Hall left the interrogation room and walked down a long, narrow corridor, McCain took a moment to comprehend how private and secure everything was within this building.

“MI6 was originally founded as the Secret Intelligence Service in 1909.” Hall narrated as they approached an elevator. “Ever since the First World War, we have been in active operation, serving and protecting the Crown’s best interests from within the shadows. Our most notable achievements came during the Second World War and the Cold War with Russia.”

Hall scanned her keycard and watched as the doors slid towards each other, sending the metal car ascending.

“With the ever-changing climate of world politics and global affairs, MI6 has begun countering terroristic acts and other similar crimes.” she continued once the elevator reached the main lobby, a large marble space with men and women in office wear interacting as they went.

“Why recruit me, though?” McCain asked, visibly confused. “I’m a Londoner, born and raised. Studied at a grade school in Kent. Went to Oxford. I’m not spy material.”

“But you were military.” Hall reminded him. “UK Special Forces.”

McCain was surprised Hall knew this information.

“MI6 and the military have a close relationship.” Hall explained as a limousine rolled up to the driveway.

“Get in. You have a flight to catch.”

As soon as McCain entered the elongated, jet-black vehicle, an elderly man in a velvet uniform stepped on the accelerator and drove off, into the city’s nightlife.

Along the way, Hall reached into the front passenger seat’s back pouch.

“Your file.” Hall handed McCain a brown folder. He peeked inside, taking out a fake passport, a mission file and boarding ticket to Moscow.

“A prominent scientist in Moscow has come to the UK embassy in the city seeking asylum. His name is Dimitri Nyechenko. Born on the third of July, 1971.” Hall began to read. “He studied briefly in Paris, London and New York before returning to Moscow at the end of the Gorbachev era. His academic excellence landed him two jobs.”

“What kind of jobs?” McCain asked, glancing at Nyechenko’s photograph. He didn’t seem too extraordinary for a man with a hundred and forty-five IQ.

“Professor of Biology at Moscow University, and a scientist for Vector, Russia’s biological research centre.” Hall revealed. “He came to the embassy with news of a deadly virus that he had discovered, which the Russians plan to use.”

“Why?”

Silence, but only for a moment. The limousine came to a halt just near the London Eye.

“The Russian government and ours have had, to put politely, wavering ties.” Hall whispered, leaning in. “Nyechenko overheard a Russian minister saying he would deploy the virus on Western European soil, using the KGB.”

“KGB?” McCain was shocked. The notorious Russian spy agency had a role in this plot.

“Yes, KGB. Look, Nyechenko agreed to deliver the formula for a cure that he’s been working on for days now in exchange for UK citizenship.” Hall continued. “Your mission is to make sure Nyechenko is safely delivered to the UK.”

McCain fell silent for the rest of the journey. He had nothing on him, but still felt fear as he was thrown into the world of espionage. Hall saw this, but said nothing until they reached the airport. Once they did and the two alighted, McCain stared at the entrance to the departure gate. Hall laid a hand on his shoulder.

“The only reason MI6 chose you is because you’ve proven a valuable asset to the military before. Your commanders all have praises for your skill.” Hall assured McCain. “I’ve given you everything I can, passport included. The UK embassy in Moscow will fill you in on the rest.”

McCain nodded and gave a discreet handshake before walking away, looking at his boarding pass for the time and date of his departure.

Time, sixteen minutes past midnight.

Which was sixteen minutes past three in the morning.

The nightlife in the city was rambunctious, with young waywards streaming into clubs for a good time. Some would even jump between these establishments, determined not to waste a single minute of their time on the streets. One such club, the most popular in the business district, could host a thousand people at a time. There were two thousand in the premises. This made it difficult for the man in the business suit to navigate through the lively den of petty criminals and delinquents. Nonetheless, he soon found himself facing a round table full of women, desperate to crowd themselves around the man in a black Adidas sweatshirt. He had a crew cut with a well-shaved face. His arms were spread out, holding one woman on each side.

“The sun has risen.” the businessman-like patron had to raise his voice over the horrible, deafening club music.

“I have heard no rooster.” the man in the Adidas sweatshirt shouted back.

“He says he is sick today.”

The man stood up, rudely bumping his escorts back onto the soft, round chair. He then circled around, walking to the back of the club. His associate followed, reaching into his jacket for a brown folder. Once both men were outside, their breaths turned to fog. It was normal in the city to see such a sight, as common as seeing the sun with minimal heat.

The two men made sure nobody was watching them.

“He’s gone to the embassy. We have a confirmed route to the extraction point.” the businessman reported, handing his client the file. “And several ideal areas to hit.”

The thug searched through the files and examined every single article within. He then examined a photograph with several red dots.

“I’ll crack the whip and get the ball rolling.” he told the businessman. “The women are for you; I have footed the bill.”

He returned the file’s contents to the businessman, who hurriedly returned them inside before anyone could see his secrets.

“You are aware that our mole must not be compromised, yes?”

The man was long gone. Now there was only one of them, standing in an alleyway looking like a lost foreigner. He sighed, having expected this pattern, and returned inside. He could use a drink, and some fun.
