Chapter 16:

The three fugitives ducked low and bent their necks slightly forwards as Gorinsky relentlessly summoned an onslaught of bullets against the laboratory. Glass shards were flying everywhere, with chemicals of all sorts leaking out. Some gas pipes began to leak, causing the gunman to stop as fumes began to spray the room.

McCain glanced up at a closet and noticed some powder-like substance. As he cocked his head slightly, the numbers and whispers returned to assist him once more.

  It was a thermite powder.

A mixture of iron oxide and aluminium.

“Does the lab have any magnesium?” he asked in a whisper, grabbing Nyechenko’s attention.

“Yes, we do.” the professor nodded in return. “It’s on the container to your left. Bottom compartment.”

McCain slowly opened the glass door as the Russian reloaded his Makarov PM behind the door frame. He slowly took a thin glass tube of the substance and grabbed the thermite powder opposite, ducking for cover just as he returned into sight. He quickly mixed the compounds in a beaker and covered it with his left hand, shaking vigorously until the granules became smooth.

“You can hide for a long time, my British friends.” Sweatshirt suddenly pronounced in English, with a heavy Russian accent. “The police will be here soon, and you will all be dead. As for myself, and my allies, we will become heroes to the federation. We will be the legends in this story.”

That was when McCain threw himself backwards, tossing a beaker towards Gorinsky like a pitcher at a baseball game. At the same time, Staliksov had recovered from his blow to the stomach and was standing up, the glass container barely missing his face. As if by instinct, Gorinsky accidentally squeezed the trigger, which caused the powder to explode. The gas fumes, now wafter across half the laboratory, were also set alight.

Staliksov was thrown forward by the impact, his pitch-black leather coat now set alight, as his friend was thrown onto his back. The Georgian let out a blood-curdling scream as the flames licked his coat, eating its way through the leather and onto his six-pack. His hair was also alight, like a torch that would signal his impending doom. Chevstoy’s corpse was unrecoverable, the flames having charred his body until it was ash-black.

“Window. Now.” Granger ordered, and McCain grabbed a nearby chair. Swinging with all his might, the MI6 agent broke the window, sending glass shards dropping onto the paved road.

Granger took several lab coats down from a nearby rack and worked with Nyechenko to make a long rope, tying one end to a gas tap fixed to the desk McCain had dodged under.

“Nyechenko. You have to go first.” Granger commanded, forcing the makeshift rope into his hands. “If you die, we’re fucked. Go!”

It took fifteen minutes before all three agents were on the ground, watching as the lab went up in flames. The sound of police sirens could be heard from a distance; Winter Snake had called in the cavalry.

“If we try to leave on foot, the cops will get to us. We need a car.” Granger scowled, furious at the current situation.

McCain noticed one of the black Toyotas parked outside the building. The headlights were on.

“There. A Toyota Hiace. Keys are in the ignition.” McCain alerted Granger. “We can use this to get to the safehouse. And then, Zelenograd.”
Granger pulled open the door and shoved Nyechenko in, tossing his briefcase inside soon after. Then, she took a large bound onto the step and pulled herself into the driver’s seat. McCain picked up an AN-94 placed on his chair and strapped in, cocking the rifle to make sure it was usable.

Turning the car around 180 degrees, Granger sped off just as Gorinsky managed to find his way towards the window, aiming at the vehicle with his rifle and firing in vain at the tires. As soon as the van disappeared and the police cars came, he let out a howl in rage and sorrow, before sliding down the rope and rushing to the second van.

Once he started its engine, the soldier of fortune turned on the radio.

“Svetlana. Return to the van, now.” he sneered, one hand gripping the wheel.

“I heard the explosion, Yuri.” the sniper reported from the staircase. “What the hell is going on?”

“Bulat is dead. Georgi is critically wounded, but I have put out his flames. He will live.” Gorinsky felt hot tears well up in his eyes. “Get the fuck down here. Now!”

He killed the call and rushed outside, waiting for the cars to arrive.

“They’re fucking gone, you idiots!” he yelled, pointing to his right. “Get them, or it’s your heads!”

Two police cars reversed and left in pursuit of the fugitives, while one stayed behind and called all the emergency services to the scene. Kamensky rushed downstairs, nudging Gorinsky to join the chase as she entered the van.

  Time, twenty-seven minutes to midnight.
