Happy Halloween Everyone!

October 31, 2017 marks the last day of the month of October. And it is also widely known as Halloween Day!

For many years, I have always wondered what is exactly the meaning of Halloween and its significant meaning. A quick search online, I managed to learn a little more about Halloween and the meaning behind the celebration.

Halloween is celebrated the eve of the Christian Holy Days of all Saints’ Day also known as All Hallows’ Day on November 1. And this is continued with All Souls’ Day on November 2. October 31 started with extending the 3 days holiday. The full name of Halloween is All Hallows’ Eve (bringing the meaning of the evening before All Hallows’ Day).

The 3 days are collectively called Allhallowtide and are time used to honor the saints and pray for the recently departed souls who have yet reach Heaven. Commemorations of all saints and martyrs will be held by churches.

Interesting facts : On the custom of wearing costumes, Christian minister Prince Sorie Conteh wrote: “It was traditionally believed that the souls of the departed wandered the earth until All Saints’ Day, and All Hallows’ Eve provided one last chance for the dead to gain vengeance on their enemies before moving to the next world. In order to avoid being recognized by any soul that might be seeking such vengeance, people would don masks or costumes to disguise their identities”.

What is the customary of Trick-or-Treat? It is a celebration for the children on Halloween. Children dressed up in costume will go from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, asking the question “Trick or Treat?”

The word “trick” implies a “threat” to perform mischief on the property if no treat is given.

Although not widely celebrated in my country, Halloween decorations and goodies are widely found everywhere. Trick or Treat…. we hardly see any kids dressed up and walking around the neighborhood. I know my kids have definitely never done that…. And with them growing up so quickly now, slowly heading into their teens, I guess there will never be chance for them to experience Halloween Treat or Trick custom.

Finally, wishing everyone everywhere…….

Happy Halloween!

Those out having fun, stay safe and have lots of fun!
